Beijing ChemTech's Secret Societies?

Question

So, I'm heading to Beijing University of Chemical Technology next semester, super excited, but also a little nervous. I've heard whispers about these... *secret* student societies, apparently some have been around for decades. They're supposedly super influential within the university, involved in everything from organizing events to, well, let's just say *things*. My question is: how easy is it for a newbie international student to get involved in one of these societies, and are there any I should definitely avoid? Or any particularly interesting ones I should look out for? I'm hoping to make some awesome friends and learn more about the university culture beyond textbooks.

Check the 社团联合会 booth during orientation week

Honestly the "secret societies" at BUCT are mostly just old student clubs like the chemical engineering association, not shadowy networks, so join via the club fair on the main campus.

monique · Answer

Most of those "societies" are just shetuan registered with the 团委, and the real barrier is language: meetings run in Mandarin. Join a hobby one like the photography or hiking club first, it's way easier to make friends there.

The ones worth your time recruit through upperclassmen in your dorm, not at any fair, so ask your laoshi who runs the good ones.
