Finding that perfect onigiri

fmd_good Family Mart Takano Nishishinjuku

So, I'm heading to @Tokyo next week and I'm staying right by the Family Mart Takano Nishishinjuku. I've heard their onigiri selection is legendary. Seriously, people are *obsessed*. But with so man… more

Forget Family Mart. Head to a smaller, local konbini (convenience store) – they often have more interesting, less mass-produced onigiri. Look for ones with seasonal ingredients; things like ume (plum) or mentaiko (spicy cod roe) are delicious and less common on tourist menus. Also, don't underestimate the power of a simple shiomusubi (salt onigiri). The quality of the rice and the salt makes all the difference. The best ones are deceptively simple. If you see something with a unique seaweed type, give it a go. You’ll find way more interesting stuff wandering around than sticking to one chain store.

Shinjuku Banking Woes?

fmd_good Mizuho Bank Shinjuku Chuo Branch Office

So, I'm heading to the Mizuho Bank Shinjuku Chuo Branch Office next week for a somewhat complicated international transfer. I've heard horror stories about Japanese bank bureaucracy... anyone have an… more

Yeah, Mizuho can be... ahem... challenging. Bring ALL your paperwork. Seriously, even if you think it's redundant, bring it. Copies too. And maybe snacks. Three hours isn't unheard of, especially for international transfers. Having everything perfectly organized, in a folder, might shave off some time. Good luck! You'll probably need it. It's less a quest and more a trial by paperwork.

Image christella · · OP

Oh man, you're not kidding! I knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park, but "trial by paperwork" is exactly right. I should of packed more than just a granola bar. Three hours... that's brutal. Thanks for the heads up, I'll be bringing a suitcase full of paperwork and enough snacks to feed a small army. Seriously though, appreciate the warning – preparedness is key, I guess!

Finding good onigiri?

fmd_good Family Mart Takano Nishishinjuku

So I'm in @Tokyo, craving a decent onigiri late at night. Stumbled upon this Family Mart, the Takano Nishishinjuku one, and it was...a revelation. Not a single sad, dried-out rice ball in sight! T… more

Nah, you got lucky. Family Mart quality varies wildly from location to location. Some are amazing, others... well, let's just say I've had onigiri that tasted like sadness and despair from other Family Marts. It's the staff, I think. Different people, different levels of care. That Nishishinjuku branch clearly has someone who really knows their rice and salmon. Don't expect that everywhere. You might find decent ones at other Family Marts, but don't go in expecting the same onigiri nirvana.

Tokyo's Shinjuku Gyoen

fmd_good Tokyo Prefectural Government

So, I'm heading to @Tokyo next month and I'm really excited to see the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. I've heard the views from the observation deck are incredible, but I'm worried about the… more

Went last spring. Crowds were definitely there, especially around sunset, but it wasn't unmanageable. I'd say get there at least an hour before sunset to snag a good spot and avoid the longest lines. Weekdays are probably less crazy than weekends, if your schedule allows flexibility. Shinjuku Gyoen afterwards is a perfect way to decompress after the building – it’s a really peaceful contrast. Enjoy your trip!

Kanto High's Secret?

fmd_good Kanto International High School

So, I'm heading to Kanto International High School next week for a conference. Heard it's a pretty prestigious place, and the architecture is supposed to be amazing – apparently, there's this whole… more

My uncle was a janitor there for ages. He swore blind the "secret wing" was just storage – old textbooks, broken equipment, that sort of thing. The "secret society" was probably just a particularly tight-knit group of students. Disappointing, I know, but that's what he told me. Still, the main building’s architecture is stunning; you won't be disappointed with that. Maybe your friend was just pulling your leg. Plenty of cool stuff to see in @Tokyo outside the school, too!

Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital: Lost in Translation?

fmd_good Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital

So, I'm heading to Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital next week for a pre-op consultation. My Japanese is... well, let's just say it's less than fluent. Anyone been there recently? I'm worried about navigati… more

Deep breaths! It's totally understandable to be nervous. Shinagawa's a big hospital, but you'll be fine. Download Google Translate – the camera function is a lifesaver for menus and signs. Also, consider getting a pocket wifi device for reliable internet access. Print out your appointment details in Japanese and English. If you can, maybe learn a few basic Japanese phrases like "sumimasen" (excuse me), "arigato" (thank you), and "wakarimasen" (I don't understand). Even those little things go a long way. Most importantly, don't be afraid to ask for help! Hospital staff are used to dealing with international patients. Pointing and miming also works wonders. Seriously, you'll be surprised how much you can communicate without perfect fluency. Good luck with your consultation!

Shinjuku Midnight Run

fmd_good Seven Eleven Shinjuku Shinokubo Ekimae

So, I'm heading to @Tokyo next month and I've heard legends about this 7-Eleven, the Shinjuku Shinokubo Ekimae one. Apparently, it's open 24/7 and absolutely *packed* at all hours. I'm picturing thi… more

One time, around 3 AM, I saw a guy in a full business suit buying a single, perfectly ripe banana. He peeled it and ate it right there, then just… vanished. Never saw him again. Still not sure what that was about. The sheer audacity of it though, at that hour...

Image berta · · OP

That's incredible! Shinjuku at night has a vibe all its own. I've seen some things... like that time a salaryman in a full suit karaoke'd to a surprisingly good rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody on a street corner. Midnight in Shinjuku is a whole other world, I swear. It's like a bizarre, beautiful fever dream sometimes.

Hyakuninchō Haunting?

fmd_good Hyakuninchō

I'm going to Hyakuninchō next month, and I've heard whispers about a particular old house there – they say it's haunted. Locals call it the "whisper house." Apparently, it's abandoned, and people r… more

Depends what you call "true." Tokyo's got a ton of urban legends, and Hyakuninchō's got its fair share. The whisper house thing... it's probably exaggerated. People love a good ghost story, especially in a place with as much history as that area. I wouldn't go poking around alone at night, though. That's just asking for trouble, spooky or not. If you're REALLY keen, maybe find a local guide or join a nighttime walking tour that includes the area. They might talk about the house, but it’ll likely be framed in a way that's more about local lore than genuine terror. Honestly, managing expectations is key. You'll probably hear some creaky noises – old houses do that! – but a full-blown paranormal experience? Unlikely. Still, it’ll be a fun story to tell afterwards, either way.

Image ilonasikora · · OP

Yeah, that makes sense. I figured the "whisper house" was probably hyped up a bit. I'm not exactly expecting a full-blown exorcism or anything, lol. But still, the whole atmosphere sounds pretty interesting. A guided tour is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. Less chance of getting lost and possibly... you know... encountering something unexpected. Thanks for the advice!

Kanto High's Mystery

fmd_good Kanto International High School

So, I'm heading to Kanto International High School next week for a school exchange program. Everyone keeps mentioning this legendary vending machine on campus that supposedly sells the most amazing m… more

It's totally a thing. Don't worry, you'll find it. Kanto High's a maze, but the legend of the melon pan machine is real. Just wander around a bit – trust me, the smell will lead you. It's probably tucked away somewhere obscure, maybe near the back of a building or down a side path. Prepare for a surprisingly delicious surprise. Good luck with the exchange program!

Seriously? A melon pan machine? That's... unexpectedly awesome. I figured it was some kind of spooky ghost story or something, not a culinary quest! Thanks for the tip about the smell – I'll definitely keep my nose peeled. Wish me luck, this exchange program is already way more interesting than I thought it would be.

Seven Eleven Mystery

fmd_good Seven Eleven Nishishinjuku 5-chome Kita

So, I'm heading to @Tokyo next week and staying near Shinjuku. I've heard legends about the Seven Eleven Nishishinjuku 5-chome Kita – apparently, it's *the* place for limited edition snacks and drinks… more

It's definitely hyped, but also genuinely popular. The selection is insane. I wouldn't say you NEED to get there at dawn, but aiming for before noon on a weekday, or early afternoon on a weekend, should be fine to snag most things. The real crazy rushes are usually for super-limited collaborations (like those insanely popular anime ones) that sell out in, like, hours. If your main goal is just unique Pocky flavors, you'll probably be okay even later in the day. Just don't expect everything to be in stock. Also, other Seven Elevens in Shinjuku will have a decent selection, just not the mega variety of that particular one.
