I went to the Great Hall of the People in Beijing last week. The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking, absolutely massive. I spent hours wandering the halls, imagining all the historical events that unfolded within those walls. But I couldn't find much information on the acoustics, I was wondering if anyone knows about the sound quality inside during major events? Did they use any specific techniques to manage the sound in such a huge space? It seemed strangely quiet in the areas open to the public, almost eerily so... I'm a sound engineer and kinda obsessed with that sort of thing.

the quiet in there is mostly the acoustic panels they put in during the 2007 renovation, same stuff they use in concert halls. the main auditorium is a different beast tho, they tune it per event with those big movable baffles up in the ceiling

I've been inside the 10,000-seat auditorium twice, once for a conference and once for a performance, and the difference was striking. For speech events they lean hard on the overhead reflector canopies and the rear wall treatment, which is why a speaker at the podium sounds surprisingly close even from the back rows. For music they pull those baffles back and let the room breathe, and the reverb tails get noticeably longer, maybe 1.8 to 2 seconds by my ear. The dead-quiet public corridors are a separate thing, mostly heavy carpet, acoustic ceiling tile, and the fact that there's almost no hard parallel surface left exposed after the renovation.

Sound design in those halls is mostly about crowd noise absorption, thousands of bodies soak up reflections anyway.
