**✈️ Arriving at Guarulhos** Most international flights land at Sao Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), about 25 km from the city center. The airport has three terminals, and Terminal 3 handles most long-haul arrivals. After baggage claim, follow signs for 'Transportation' to find taxis, rideshares, and the airport bus. For domestic flights, Congonhas Airport (CGH) is much closer to downtown, only 8 km from Paulista Avenue. **🚌 Airport Bus Options** The cheapest way into the city is the regular airport bus. From GRU, the 'Airport Bus Service' (formerly called 'Ônibus Executivo') runs to Praça da República in the city center for about R$50 (around $10). Buses leave every 30-60 minutes from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and the trip takes 45-90 minutes depending on traffic. From Congonhas, local buses like 675I-10 go to Praça da República for R$4.40, but they are slower and crowded. **🚕 Taxi and Rideshare** Taxis from GRU to the city center cost around R$150-200 ($30-40) and take 40-60 minutes in normal traffic. Use the official taxi rank outside arrivals, and insist on the meter (taxímetro). Rideshares like Uber and 99 are often cheaper (R$80-120) but require walking to the designated pick-up area in the parking garage. From Congonhas, a taxi to Paulista Avenue costs about R$40-50. **🚇 Metro and Train** Sao Paulo's metro does not directly serve either airport, but you can combine the airport bus with the metro. From GRU, take the airport bus to Tietê Bus Terminal, then transfer to the metro Line 1 (Blue) at Portuguesa-Tietê station. From Congonhas, walk 15 minutes to São Judas metro station (Line 1) or take a short bus ride. The metro fare is R$4.40, and trains run from 4:40 AM to midnight. **💰 Fares and Payment** Public transport in Sao Paulo uses the Bilhete Único card, which you can buy at metro stations for R$4.40 per ride. Airport buses accept cash, but it's best to have small bills. Taxis and rideshares accept credit cards, but carry some cash for smaller operators. A prepaid taxi voucher from the airport counter can be a safe option if you want to avoid language issues. **⏱️ Travel Times** Traffic in Sao Paulo can be brutal, especially during rush hours (7-10 AM and 5-8 PM). A taxi from GRU to the city center can take up to 2 hours in heavy traffic, while the airport bus might take 90 minutes. The metro is often faster and more predictable, but requires a transfer. Allow at least 3 hours before your flight for the return trip. **⚠️ Avoiding Taxi Scams** Unofficial taxis often approach you inside the terminal, claiming to be 'official' and quoting flat rates that are double the normal fare. Always use the taxi rank outside or pre-book through your hotel. Check that the driver starts the meter immediately, and refuse if they don't. Also, avoid taxis that don't have a company logo or license plate visible. **📱 Booking Tips** For rideshares, book after you collect your luggage and follow the app's directions to the pick-up zone. For airport buses, buy tickets at the counter inside the terminal or pay the driver with cash. If you arrive late at night, pre-book a private transfer through services like Welcome Pickups or your hotel for peace of mind. Always confirm the price before getting into any vehicle.
