The couvert is legal and usually printed on a small card or menu, so check for it before ordering, but random items appearing means you were worked.

Couvert card usually comes with the menu, ask upfront

Yeah the printed card is the tell, but random items still showing up means they were padding the tab, not just charging couvert.

Is R$18 Normal for a Coffee in Sao Paulo 2026?

Is that a normal price in the city in 2026 or am I being tourist-taxed? Also curious whether the R$45 they want for a simple lunch is in the same ballpark.

18 is steep unless it's a third-wave spot with single-origin beans; a pingado at a boteco counter runs about 6.

R$18 is on the high end but not crazy for a specialty spot in Jardins or Vila Madalena. I pay closer to R$12-14 at a padaria or a neighborhood cafe. R$45 for lunch is normal-ish in those areas, though a prato do dia runs R$25-30.

Padaria coffee is the move, way better value
