I'm visiting Sao Paulo in 2026 and staying close to Pedacinho de Amor Sandra & Cia. What's a good cafe nearby for a proper sit-down breakfast, and what time does it usually get busy? coffee lab on oscar freire, quieter before 8

Agree, the pão de queijo there is worth the early start.

Oscar Freire gets slammed by 10 on Saturdays.

Seven in the morning there means no queue at all, and the padaria next door opens even earlier if u want a full plate.

Padaria Santa Efigênia on Teodoro Sampaio, opens 6.

Not sure which exact block that shop is on, but the area around Rua Teodoro Sampaio in Pinheiros has plenty of cafes. For a sit-down breakfast, try somewhere on the side streets off the main drag. Mornings get busy after 9am on weekends, so go earlier if you want a table.

yeah side streets are the move, try before 8:30

The couvert is legal and usually printed on a small card or menu, so check for it before ordering, but random items appearing means you were worked.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Couvert card usually comes with the menu, ask upfront

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Asking upfront works, though plenty of places near CSa only hand over the couvert card after you sit and order drinks.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Yeah the printed card is the tell, but random items still showing up means they were padding the tab, not just charging couvert.

Padded tabs happen, but check the nota fiscal too

arrow_drop_up 9 arrow_drop_down

Fair point on teh card. But honestly the nota fiscal is what settles it, ask for it when you pay.
