Scuola San Giovanni Evangelista's Secrets?

Question

I'm heading to @Rome next month and stumbled upon this school, Scuola San Giovanni Evangelista, online. It looks beautiful, the architecture alone is stunning from the pictures. My great-grandmother, who sadly passed, always talked about her time in Rome, though she never mentioned this particular school. She was a bit of a mystery, even to her own children. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any local legends or interesting stories associated with the school? I'd love to find some way to connect with her memory whilst I'm there. Maybe some old photos or anecdotes? It would mean the world to me.

If you're looking for a personal connection, the Biblioteca Vallicelliana near Piazza della Chiesa Nuova has a collection of early 20th century Roman school records and memorabilia that doesn't get much attention. It's not specific to that school, but they've got old student registers and photographs from the city's religious institutions that might include something. The archivist there is a bit gruff but knows the material inside out, you'd just need to ask for their pre-1950 education files. Also, the school itself sometimes opens for the European Heritage Days in September, but if you're here next month you might miss that.

yeah that school is tucked away on piazza di porta san giovanni, it's easy to miss even if you walk past it. the facade has these faded frescoes that barely survived the 19th century renovations, i remember reading they were originally way more elaborate. if you're trying to feel connected, the courtyard has an old well that dates back to the convent days, it's a quiet spot most tourists skip. maybe check the archivio di stato on via g. galilei, they hold old property records from the 1500s that might mention the school's early years, it's a long shot but locals use it for genealogy stuff sometimes

honestly i don't know much about secret legends but that school is right near the basilica di san giovanni in laterano, like a 2 minute walk. if your great-grandma was into religious history or architecture that whole area is packed with layers. the scuola itself was originally a convent i think, built in the 1500s, so there's a chance she might have visited the church next door even if she never mentioned the school.

the lateran palace has some wild old photos in their museum, maybe start there. also there's a tiny bookshop on via merulana that sells local history pamphlets, they might have something specific about the school or the old convent days. tbh even if you don't find her exact story, standing in that courtyard feels like stepping back a century

theres a small museum inside the palazzo lateranense that has old school uniforms and classroom photos from the 1920s. might be worth checking if your great-grandma was around back then. also the convent garden has a lemon tree supposedly planted by a 17th century pope, locals
