I am looking for alternatives to popular sites like Booking.com and Airbnb, preferably with options around 300 euros or less. Can anyone recommend reliable websites or platforms for this?

check Cross Pollinate and The Beehive, both are smaller Rome-based booking sites that mostly do rooms and apartments for groups and they don't show up much on the big platforms. Also worth trying is a residence or "residenza" rather than a hotel, places like Residenza Trastevere or ones around San Giovanni often have quad or quintuple rooms for 200-280 a night if you book direct by email. June 1-7 is Republic Day on the 2nd so expect a small bump that weekend, book sooner rather than later. one more thing, message places directly on WhatsApp, a lot of Roman guesthouses will drop the price if you skip the booking fee.

honestly for 5 people in Rome the hostel route is worth a look, not just apartments. Check Ostello Bello and The Yellow, both do private rooms or family rooms and they're around Termini and Ostiense, way cheaper than a full Airbnb for that group size. Also try CaseVacanza.it, it's an Italian site with lots of local listings you won't see on Booking, and June 1-7 is right before the real summer crush so you might still catch decent prices. 300 a night for five is tight in the center though, maybe look at neighborhoods like Pigneto or Tuscolana and take the metro in.

tbh for a group that size I'd look at convent or monastery guesthouses, they're all over Rome and stupid cheap. Istituto Santa Maria dell'Orto near Trastevere and the Salesiani spots by Termini take families and you're looking at way under 300 for a room that sleeps five. book direct though, most of em barely show up on the big sites.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
