What are the entry procedures for the Colosseum on free admission days?

If I arrive at 7 am, what time can I expect to enter? Additionally, I have heard conflicting information about which entrances are available during free admission days, some sources mention multiple entrances while others state only the main entrance is accessible. Could you clarify this?

free sundays at the colosseum are chaos tbh. gates open 8:30 but on free days they usually start letting people in around 8 or even a bit earlier if the line is already huge, so 7am arrival puts u near the front but not first. the catch is the ticket office queue vs the group entrance on via labicana, on free days they often funnel everyone through the main side near the arch of constantine and close the labicana one, so dont count on multiple entrances. bring ID, they sometimes check it against the free ticket they hand out

aug 1 is a friday so ur first sunday is aug 3, just so u know the free day doesnt hit til then. for the 7am thing, honestly the heat in early august is the real enemy, by 930 the queue in the open piazza is brutal with zero shade, so people start queuing way before dawn just to beat it. my tip: skip the 7am line entirely and go late afternoon instead, around 4 or 5, the morning crowd has cleared and they still let u in free til about an hour before closing. also the via labicana side is where the guards sometimes wave u through faster if ur solo, worth a shot before committing to the main scrum

Your first Sunday is August 3, and the free entry runs the whole day, not just the morning, so the 7am rush is mostly people who think it's the only window. The ticket they hand out on those days is timed even though it costs nothing, you still have to pick a slot at the counter or on the app, and the 24-hour online booking releases a batch at midnight. If you're set on going, book the midnight drop and aim for a 9:30 or 10am slot, you'll walk past the entire dawn queue. Otherwise the last entry is usually around 18:15 in summer, and the 17:00 slots are far calmer than anything before noon.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
