Ancient Rome's Echoes?

Question

So, I'm visiting @Rome next month and I'll be near the Liceo Classico Statale "Giulio Cesare." My friend, a history buff, says it's in an area steeped in ancient Roman history. I'm hoping to soak it all in. I was wondering if anyone who's been near the school knows of any cool, lesser-known historical sites or hidden pathways nearby that aren't in the usual tourist guides? I'm really interested in the vibe of the neighborhood, you know, the feeling of history just hanging in the air. Any tips would be amazing!

if you're at giulio cesare you're basically sitting on the edge of the Suburra, the old plebeian district, and that's the layer most people never clock. walk up via del grillo past the school and you hit piazza di san martino ai monti, where the basilica sits on a titulus from the 3rd century and the crypt underneath still has bits of roman wall. the titulus churches are the real hidden thing around monti, san martino, san clemente, santa prassede over on via di santa prassede, they're all early christian house churches stacked on roman foundations and half of them you can just walk into for free. i'd skip the colosseum view at sunset and instead sit on the steps near the torre dei capocci around 7, the light hits the brickwork sideways and the whole street goes orange.

The Giulio Cesare school sits on Via Cavour in the Monti rione, and honestly the neighborhood itself is the attraction. Walk down Via dei Serpenti toward the Colosseum and you'll pass the Torre dei Conti, a 13th century tower built on top of a Roman foundation, and further along the Basilica of San Clemente on Via San Giovanni in Laterano, which is a proper three layer archaeological site: a 12th century church over a 4th century one over a 1st century Mithraeum. That one usually has a short queue but most tourists skip it for the Colosseum. For the vibe you're after, just wander the side streets between Via Cavour and Via Nazionale in the evening, the neighborhood gets very quiet and the old stone walls do most of the talking.

via cavour is fine but honestly if ur near giulio cesare just duck into via baccina & the little lanes behind the forums, thats where the vibe actually lives. there's a spot on via di san francesco di paola where u look down & it's just layers of brick from like three different centuries, republic era stuff under medieval stuff. i walk my dog there most mornings & it never gets old. also check the basilica of santi quirico e giulitta, tiny romanesque church, usually empty, has a crypt with roman bits in it. way quieter than san clemente which is lovely but gets picked over

honestly the giulio cesare area gets slept on because everyone beelines for the colosseum. behind the school there's salita del grillo, a stepped alley that climbs up to the torre delle milizie, and if you poke around the base you can still see medieval graffiti and bits of roman brick mixed into the wall. i cut through there on my way to work and it's dead quiet most mornings, just cats and the occasional guy watering plants. also duck into the basilica di san vitale on via nazionale, it's half sunk below street level and almost always empty, which tells you how few people bother.
