i'm moving to Cairo for a year and staying near the Citadel in Salah El Din, trying to sort out a residency permit before i arrive. which permit do i actually need for that long and what documents does it require? also what usually goes wrong at the mugamma so i can avoid it

For a year you'll want the work or student route, not the 90 day tourist extension, and bring photocopies of everything.

Bring two passport photos, they always ask for more.

The real bottleneck is the bank statement stamp and the lease notarized at the local shahr aqari office, so sort those first.
