Machikou Mystery?

Question

So, I'm heading to Machikou next month, it's a bit of a spur-of-the-moment trip. I've heard whispers of a hidden courtyard, somewhere near the old market, supposedly filled with ancient, gnarled trees and forgotten temples. People say there's an energy there, a vibe... hard to explain. Locals avoid talking about it too much, though. Anyway, my question is: anyone know the real story behind this place? Is it just local legend, or is there something actually... *there*? I'm packing my camera, hoping to get some pics, but I'm kinda nervous about wandering around alone. Seriously though, this whole thing's got me hooked

honestly the "mystery" angle probably comes from the fact that the whole area got half cleared and half abandoned during the mining shutdown years, so u get these weird pockets where a lane just ends in rubble & nobody bothers to explain why. if ur nervous about going alone maybe ask at the little shop by the bus stop, the owners usually know which courtyards are empty vs which still have people living in them

Machikou isn't really a single village, it's a string of hamlets along the old coal road up toward Mentougou, and the "old market" people mention is probably the one by the Changyu junction. The courtyard you're describing sounds like the one attached to a small ruined temple, I've seen it marked on old county maps as a 关帝庙 but nobody's maintained it in decades. The gnarled trees are mostly old cypress and scholar trees, some of them genuinely ancient, and the "energy" is probably just how quiet it gets once you're off the main road. Go with someone who knows the lanes, the turnings look identical after the third one.

the "locals avoid talking about it" thing is mostly because half those courtyards near the old market are still privately owned by families who've been there for generations & they get tired of people wandering in. if u do go, the etiquette is to knock, ask, and dont just start shooting pics. i'd also say skip the solo sunset trip, the lanes off the main drag get genuinely dark & the bus back toward town stops running around 6ish. bring a headlamp not just ur camera
