my grandpa went in 2007 and he said the same thing about the silence. he grew up in a village near Zhengzhou, whole family was basically starving in the 60s, and he still calls Mao "the savior" without blinking. i used to argue with him about it but honestly for his generation it's less politics and more like... the guy who ended the chaos they were born into. that reverence you saw is prob a lot of rural folks carrying that same thing, not ideology exactly
the queue starts moving around 7am, before that it's mostly tour groups from other provinces. i went on a tuesday in november and waited maybe 40 min, way better than summer when it's 2+ hours. what got me was the mausoleum itself, the wax figure thing, people shuffling past in total silence with tears on their faces. that reverence is real, it's just not really about ideology for a lot of them

honestly the menu price is the menu price, around 128 for a whole margherita at the Sanlitun branch. What you saw was prob a lunch set or a Dianping coupon, those run cheaper if u order thru the app. nobody's charging laowai rates there in 2026.

the two-price thing is usually a set menu vs a la carte mixup, the set comes with a drink & salad so it looks cheaper per head. i usually just grab a slice at the counter around 28-32 depending on topping. ask for the printed menu, not the QR code one
Fair point on the set versus a la carte confusion. One detail though: the counter slices are smaller than the dine in ones, so per gram you're paying more. If you're splitting with two people, the whole pie wins.

Counter slices at Sanlitun also shrink after 8pm, so the 28-32 rate buys you noticeably less pizza than at lunch.
