I spent hours wandering around, completely lost, despite having a map. It's like a labyrinth of trendy boutiques and food stalls. I found some amazing handmade jewelry, but then completely missed the exit I was aiming for. It's beautiful, but incredibly easy to get disoriented. Anyone else experience this? Any tips for navigating this massive place without getting hopelessly lost?

The trick I use is to treat the building numbers like a clock face. Fangyuanli is split into zones A through D and they run clockwise from the north entrance, so if you know you came in from the Wangjing side you're already at zone A and everything else follows from there. The boutique cluster with the handmade jewelry is usually zone C, which is why people overshoot the north exit, it's the far side of the loop. Also worth noting the place gets genuinely quiet after 8pm on weekdays, so if you want to wander without the crowd crush that's your window.

yeah that place is a maze, the layout is basically concentric rings around the central atrium so if u lose the atrium ur done. my trick is to always clock which ring ur on by the floor color, they actually change slightly between levels. also the exit near the metro (line 10) is way less crowded than the main one on the north side, most ppl dont realize there are like 4 exits

honestly the food court on the lower level is teh best landmark, just aim for that whenever ur turned around. also download the mall's own app before u go, it has a decent indoor map with your location dot which is way better than the paper one

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
