Where can visitors go rowing in the city?

What is the best way to get in touch with them or find other rowing opportunities?

If you don't hear back from the park, try the booking side rather than the venue side. A lot of the Shunyi sessions get subcontracted to clubs like Beijing Rowing and Canoeing Association affiliates, and they handle reservations directly. Search for 北京赛艇 on WeChat or Xiaohongshu and you'll find clubs posting open slots, some even arrange transport from Dongzhimen.

For a backup, Houhai is fine for a lazy paddle but it's all pedal boats and chaos, not real rowing. If you want actual oars in the water without the Shunyi hassle, the Liangma River near Solana has a small rowing outfit in summer, quieter and closer to the center. July means 6:30 to 8am is your only civilized window, by 10 the humidity is brutal.

The Olympic course at Shunyi is genuinely world class but it's a competition venue first, so public rowing there is limited to specific sessions and they often get bumped for events or training. If you're set on it, calling the park's main line (010-8948 2008) during weekday office hours tends to work better than email, and ask specifically about 赛艇 (rowing) versus 皮划艇 (canoeing) since those are booked separately.

For something more reliable, the Beijing Rowing Club near Yuyuantan does coached sessions on the canal there, and they're used to short-term visitors. July mornings before 8am are your only realistic window, the heat and afternoon storms make anything later pretty miserable.

Shunyi park is way out past the 6th ring road, near the airport, so factor in a solid hour+ from central Beijing. tbh their phone is hit or miss, but WeChat is how locals actually reach them, search 顺义奥林匹克水上公园 on WeChat and message the official account, usually get a reply same day. For actual rowing (not just pedal boats) you might have better luck with the rowing clubs around Houhai or Kunming Lake at Yiheyuan, though those are more touristy. Mid-July is peak heat and afternoon thunderstorms are common, so aim for early morning slots if u can.

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
