the official weibo account for beijing's dongcheng district actually runs a series called "street corner stories" that features old buildings in the chinatown area. they post old photos side by side with current ones and explain what used to happen there. also if you're still in town the liulichang antique market has old guys selling vintage postcards and photographs from the 50s and 60s, you can find shots of those exact buildings sometimes for like 20 kuai each
there's a wechat group called "old beijing memories" or something similar, people post vintage pics and ask about specific spots all the time. also the capital museum has a permanent exhibit on beijing's old commercial districts, includes some chinatown area buildings with backstories from the 30s and 40s. you might need to read chinese for the captions though

Just get there by 6am to catch the soft light and the morning activities.
The Summer Palace at sunset is hard to beat, especially from the long corridor looking west across Kunming Lake. You get the reflection of the pagoda on the water and the hills turning orange behind it. If you want something more gritty, the hutong rooftops around Nanluoguxiang offer a different perspective, just find a bar or a hostel with a roof terrace around dusk.
