Replacing a MacBook Pro battery?

the Apple quote is high partly because on those 2019 models they swap the whole top case, keyboard and all, so you're paying for a lot of parts you don't actually need. a straight battery-only job is totally doable, i've seen it done at a small shop in the basement of Terminal 21, forget the exact name but it's near the food court side. they charged a friend of mine around 3,000 baht and it's held up fine for over a year.

one thing to check before you commit anywhere, ask if the replacement cell is genuine or a decent aftermarket brand like Simplo or Sunwoda, the no-name ones die in six months. also worth knowing that if the shop glues it in badly you can get swelling down the line, so a place that offers even a 3 month warranty is worth the extra few hundred baht.

honestly the top case thing is real but there's a cheaper angle nobody mentions. those 2019 13" and 15" batteries are held in with those pull tabs plus adhesive strips, and if the shop knows what they're doing they can do it without wrecking the keyboard. the risk is when they rush it and puncture a cell, which is why you want someone who's done a lot of them.

for sourcing, ifixit won't ship here but you can order the same OEM-ish cells off Lazada or Shopee from local sellers, or have a friend mule it in. some shops on Sukhumvit soi 71 side and around Phrom Phong will let you bring your own battery and just charge labor, usually 1,000 to 1,500 baht. that's the cheapest route if you're willing to wait on shipping.

one thing to watch, ask them to calibrate the new battery after install and check the cycle count resets in system report. if it still reads the old count they didn't actually swap it or the controller didn't take.

Dr MacBook on Sukhumvit 39 is legit for this, they quoted me around 3,500 to 4,500 baht for an Intel MBP battery swap last year, depends on whether they have the cell in stock. The Apple rep wasn't lying about the top case thing, on those 2019 models the battery is glued to the keyboard assembly so Apple replaces the whole thing by policy. Third party shops just pry the old cell out and glue a new one in, which is fine most of the time but the adhesive job matters. If you want a second option, try the repair cluster in Pantip Plaza or MBK, but Dr MacBook is prob your best bet for a real warranty.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
