Staying in a hotel but partying in hostels?

Question

Hey everyone! Is it ok with hostels if we hang out in their facilities without booking a room or bed?

I'm planning a solo trip and would love to get the fun hostel vibes with parties, bar crawls, and activities (happy to pay if there's a fee, of course). However, I think I would prefer staying in a hotel for the extra comfort and privacy. I know some hostels might not allow outsiders, so if you've got any experience in Bangkok to share about "hostels life", I'd really appreciate your insights. Thanks!

Also, if you have any good hostels recommendations to help making friends, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you!

honestly most hostels in bangkok are pretty chill about it, especially the big party ones. they want the vibe, not just the beds. just buy a drink at their bar or join a paid event like a pub crawl and nobody will bat an eye. the common areas are usually open to anyone who's spending money.

i'd say avoid the super small boutique hostels though, they're more strict. stick to the ones that advertise "social hostel" or have a rooftop bar. for recommendations, check out Bed Station on a backpacker street near Khaosan, they have a pool table and daily events, and Mad Monkey on Khaosan itself is chaos but you'll meet people in like 5 minutes. both are fine with walk-ins for their bar crawls, just show up and ask at the front desk.

one thing to watch: some hostels have keycard access for the dorms and wifi, so you won't get those. but that's not what you're after anyway. if you're staying in a hotel, maybe pick one within walking distance of khaosan so you can stumble back easy after the crawl.

The hostel bars in Bangkok are mostly businesses first, so as long as you're spending something they'll treat you like a guest. Buy a drink, join a paid crawl, and you're fine. The catch is that some of the better social events, like family dinners or game nights, are for residents only because they're capped at a certain number of people. So you might miss out on those, but the bar crawls and rooftop parties are usually open to anyone.

For a different vibe than the Khaosan chaos, try Lub d on Silom Road. It's a bigger, more polished hostel with a pool and a bar that gets a good mix of travelers and locals, and they run a weekly pub crawl that starts at their lobby. They're used to walk-ins for the bar, just tell the front desk you're there for the event. Another option is The Yard Hostel near Ari, which has a open-air garden bar that's super chill and draws a more laid-back crowd, they host movie nights and live music that outsiders can join for a small fee.

If you're set on Khaosan, just know the street itself is the real party, the hostels there are just a base. You could easily stay in a hotel a few blocks away on Rambuttri Road, which is calmer but still two minutes from the chaos, and just wander into any hostel bar that looks lively. That way you get your quiet sleep and the hostel social scene without any

yeah it's totally a thing here, most hostels are basically bars with beds upstairs. the staff won't even check if you're a guest unless you try to get into the dorm areas. just be upfront at the front desk and buy a drink, that's the unwritten rule.

fwiw i'd skip the khaosan mega-hostels if you want actual conversations, they're so loud you can't hear anyone. try the smaller spots around siam square or even ekkamai, they do "open nights" where outsiders are welcome for like 100-150 baht and you get a free drink token. check their instagram stories, they post the event schedules there.

one thing nobody mentions: hotel guests can still join hostel pub crawls if you book through their booking sites like hostelworld, sometimes it's listed as an add-on. that way you're technically a paying customer and they'll put you in the group chat for the night. the vibe is way more organic than just walking in cold.

for meeting people without the hostel scene, try the sky train bar crawls that leave from phrom phong station on fridays, it's a mix of locals and tourists and you don't need a bed anywhere. that's been my go-to lately, less chaotic than khaosan and you actually remember people's names the next day.
