If you're already on soi 11 the move is to walk five minutes to soi 10 and hit Hai Somboon, the pork satay and som tam there beat most of the sit down places on the main strip and you'll pay half. For pad thai specifically though I'd argue the good stuff isn't in a restaurant at all, it's the old aunties doing it on carts in Thonglor around soi 38 after 9pm, 60 baht a plate and they've been at it for decades. Sukhumvit prices in general run about double what you'd pay across the river, so if 200 baht feels cheap that's telling you something about the neighborhood.

white flower is solid but soi 11 is a tourist trap for most other stuff tbh. if u want the real thing go to jay fai on maha chai road, the crab omelette is like 500 baht now which sounds crazy but its worth doing once. or just hit any random shophouse with a charcoal grill out front around yaowarat after 6pm, thats where the actual locals eat

The real move is to skip the restaurant pad thai entirely and go hunt down a stall doing kuay teow khua gai, the charred flat noodle version cooked in a screaming hot wok. Victory Monument area around the boat noodle alleys has a few, and you'll pay under 100 baht. Different dish than what everyone's arguing about but honestly closer to what Thai people actually eat for lunch.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
