if you're into more experimental or electronic stuff, head to contact in shibuya. it's a cramped basement venue but the crowd is super into gear talk and there's a listening bar vibe before shows start. also, the vinyl shop 'disk union' in shinjuku has a basement floor where staff play random records and people just stand around chatting about production or rare pressings. good way to meet producers or collectors without any pressure

honestly if you're in shimokitazawa, three steps down has a tiny back room that turns into a jam space after midnight. it's not advertised, you just gotta ask the bartender. also the jirokichi record bar in koenji is full of old heads who'll argue about jazz fusion vs 80s city pop for hours. bring a turntable needle or a weird b-side to break the ice

check out the basement at rock bar in shinjuku. it's a tiny dive under the golden gai area, musicians hang there late. also there's a place called sound studio noa near shibuya, they have open mic nights on weekdays. just go alone and sit at the counter, someone will start talking gear or records with you within 10 minutes

There's a spot in Nakano called Jam Bar Base that's literally just a tiny room above a ramen shop. Everyone brings their own instrument and the owner lets you sign up for a slot to play or just hang and chat gear between sets. Super friendly, no pretension at all.

honestly if u're near kichijoji, the jazz cafe 'cafe arizona' is super lowkey. the owner's a session guitarist and people just show up with their instruments sometimes. no stage or anything, just sit and chat. also check out 'rockers' in koenji if u want more punk/indie vibes, they have a vinyl listening corner where randos trade recs
