Advice on Countryside locations near Tokyo?

Question

Hey all,

looking for some advice for some nice places between Tokyo and Osaka that are more "countryside-ish". going with some mates in March and were keen to have a visit of Japan countryside and maybe do some nice hikes or walks. Were going from Tokyo to Osaka so ideally somewhere on the way to make it easier for travel.

I saw that the Minami Alps look really nice but wouldnt mind other peoples experiences or opinions?

Cheers yall

The Minami Alps are great but you're right, they take some effort to get to. For something with less travel time that still feels properly rural, consider the Kiso Valley area around Nagiso. Magome and Tsumago get mentioned a lot for good reason, but if you want a quieter version, the walk from Tsumago to Nojiri is about 6km and barely anyone does it past the main section. There's a little soba place called Matsuya in Tsumago that does handmade buckwheat noodles for around 1200 yen, and in March you might catch the last of the plum blossoms along the path.

Another option that's directly on the Shinkansen line is a stop at Odawara, then a 20 minute bus to the old Tokaido highway near Hakone. Most tourists head straight for the ropeway and lake, but the stretch from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto has sections of original stone paving and mossy tea houses that are completely empty on weekdays. You can walk about 4 hours along the old road with views of the castle behind you and the mountains ahead.

If you want countryside that's actually on the Shinkansen line, try stopping at Hamamatsu. Most people just blast through it on the way to Kyoto but the area around Lake Hamana has a really relaxed rural feel with oyster huts along the lake and some easy walking trails through tea plantations. The unagi there is famous too, there's a place called Sakai that's been running since the Meiji era and it's right near the station.

For a proper hike that's still convenient, the Takao to Jinba loop north of Tokyo works well. You take the Keio line from Shinjuku to Takao, hike about 4-5 hours through forested ridges to Jinba, then bus back down. It's not as dramatic as the Minami Alps but the views of Fuji on a clear March day are excellent and you'll have the trail mostly to yourselves on a weekday. There's a temple on the way called Yakuoin that does shojin ryori if you book ahead.

yeah the minami alps are beautiful but honestly not the most convenient for a tokyo to osaka trip. if you want something that feels properly rural without going too far off the shinkansen, try stopping at maibara. it's a tiny station between nagoya and kyoto where most people just change trains, but the area around ibuki is right there and has some solid easy hikes through rice paddies and small shrines.

there's a trail up mt ibuki itself that takes about 2-3 hours and in march you'll get views of biwa lake with snow still on the peaks. the onsen at ibukigawa is like 800 yen and has this outdoor bath looking straight at the mountain, feels completely remote even though you're only 15 minutes from the station.

another underrated spot is the area around kameyama on the kisei line. old tea farming villages with stone walls and narrow lanes, barely any tourists ever go there. the hike from kameyama station to the shichiri observatory is about 5km through bamboo groves and you'll probably not see another foreigner the whole time. there's a family-run soba place near the trailhead called kameyama soba that does a simple zaru soba for 900 yen, no english menu but the old lady running it is really nice

honestly the Minami Alps are gorgeous but theyre a bit out of the way if you're on the Shinkansen line between Tokyo and Osaka. you'd have to go down to Kofu then bus into the mountains which eats up a day.

if you want something easier that still feels proper countryside, stop at Yamanakako just past Fuji. it's not exactly rural farm life but the hiking around the lake is chill and you get that killer Fuji view without the crowds at Kawaguchiko. there's a 3-4 hour trail that loops around the north shore with almost no people in March.

another option is Magome and Tsumago along the Nakasendo trail. theyre a bit south of the direct Tokyo-Osaka route (you take the Shinkansen to Nagoya then a local train) but its one of the best preserved post towns and the walk between them is like 8km through cedar forests and old stone paths. prob the most "countryside" vibe you'll get without going deep into the alps
