Samurai Restaurant Shinjuku tattoos?

Question

Hi all, thinking about attending in the future, the robot restaurant didn't want visible tattoos, is the same rule applied to this restaurant?

sylvelinmandel · Answer

you'll prob be fine with tattoos there, it's a totally different vibe from the robot place. the samurai restaurant is basically a big tourist trap but they're pretty chill about that stuff

if you're going for the show just know the food is an afterthought, like edible but nothing special. i'd grab a bowl of ramen at nagi in golden gai before or after instead of eating there

also the performers will try to pull you on stage for photos and stuff, way more interactive than the robot show ever was. bring a good phone camera cause the lighting is terrible for pics

katrina · Answer

tattoos are fine at samurai restaurant, theyre way more laid back than robot restaurant was. the robot place had that whole weird policy cause they were trying to court a more conservative crowd before they shut down

the real question is whether you actually want to go there though. the show is basically a loud samurai themed dinner theater, the actors are trying their best but its pretty cheesy. for the same money you could do a really nice yakiniku dinner at yakiniku jumbo in shinjuku sanchome, no show but the meat is incredible and zero tattoo issues

if you are set on the samurai thing, go for the later seating around 8pm, the crowd is more lively and the performers seem to feed off that energy. earlier shows can feel a bit dead

imo you'll be fine with tattoos at samurai restaurant, it's not like the robot place at all. the staff there are pretty used to tourists and i've never heard of them turning anyone away for ink

but honestly the whole thing is a bit of a tourist trap, the show is loud and chaotic in a fun way but the food is whatever. if you're set on a themed dinner check out gonpachi in nishi-azabu instead, that's the "kill bill" restaurant and they don't care about tattoos either, plus the soba is actually good

just a heads up the shinjuku samurai place gets packed so book ahead if you go, and bring cash cause they don't always take cards at the door

diana · Answer

yeah samurai restaurant is way more tattoo friendly than robot restaurant was. that place had weird rules about everything honestly

the show itself is fun but dont expect amazing food, its more about the performance. if tattoos are your main concern youll be fine though, ive seen plenty of people with visible ink in there

if you want a better meal with a show maybe check out ninja cafe in asakusa instead. similar vibe but the food is actually decent and they dont care about tattoos either

theresia · Answer

totally fine with ink at samurai restaurant, they dont check or care. the robot place was an outlier with that policy

if you want a more authentic samurai vibe without the tourist markup, head to kagurazaka instead. there's a small theater there that does period plays with actual tea ceremony, way less crowded and the actors are legit. about a 15 min train from shinjuku

the show at samurai restaurant is fun for what it is, just temper expectations on the meal itself. the kagurazaka spot is cash only and you might need a japanese speaker to book but worth it if you can figure it out
