Is Foodland in Tokyo worth a stop for groceries in 2026?

Staying near one next month and wondering if Foodland is more of a local basics store or actually good for cheap meals and snacks. any must buy items there? foodland is basically a discount grocer so don't expect a full meal setup, but the prepared bento and onigiri near the register are cheap and fine for a quick lunch. grab the store brand yogurt drinks and any marked down sashimi if u see it early

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Agree on the sashimi, but go before 10am since the 20-30% off stickers land early and the good trays vanish by noon.

Weekday mornings beat weekends, shelf gets wiped by 9.

Yogurt drinks go fast on weekends.

Their hot deli case, cheap and filling.

Check the meat counter, 50% off after 7pm.

store brand milk & tofu, cheapest in the neighborhood

honestly the onigiri are fine but the real move is the frozen gyoza, cheap and decent. dunno why nobody mentions it. maybe google the rest.

the fried chicken counter, way back by the deli

karaage there is solid but ask them to re-fry it if it's been sitting, way better hot

Is this garden entry fee in Tokyo a scam? 2026

depends where. some small private gardens, especially the ones attached to temples or old estates, do charge a couple hundred yen cash at the gate and you just drop it in a box. no ticket is normal there. but if it was a random guy with no signboard and no price posted, that's off. legit places always have the fee written somewhere visible

yeah the signboard part is the giveaway tbh

The ones with a proper 入口 sign and a little 賽銭箱 are fine, it's the guy with nothing posted who's the problem.

Image yuinaka local ·

Also watch for a proper 受付 counter or staffed window, since random guys collecting cash at unmarked gates are prob just scamming tourists.

yep temple gardens like Rikugien side shrines do this, but the box itself is the tell. a plain wooden box with a slot and a small お賽銭 label is normal. a guy holding the cash in his hand is not.

ask to see the kanji sign & the fee box first, since anywhere legit like Kyu-Furukawa or Happo-en posts it at the gate
