Last time I just stuck with Khaosan Road with all the backpackers and it was okay but I'm not rushing back due to the excess noise, crowdedness, overpersistance among other factors.

What are some decent bar/club areas near Sukhumvit (where I'm staying) where solo travellers go with a mix of Farrang and local patrons? Would be nice to interact with some locals other than every single farrang. Obviously freelancers can't be avoided but less of them would desirable.

Obviously not Soi Cowboy or Nana Plaza.

I'm into 'quieter' bars, EDM and specific EDM genres such as house, trance, Drum n bass, tech house etc if that narrows down some places.

Are Rachada or RCA worth visiting?

for your taste, rca is actually worth a look, specifically route 66 and onyx if they have a dnb or tech house night on. the crowd is mostly thai university students and young locals, not many farang tourists. check their facebook pages the day before you go, they post the set times and genre. it's a bit of a cab ride from sukhumvit but the vibe is way more genuine than the soi 11 scene

if you want something closer, try demo on soi 11, it's an open-air spot with a downstairs club area that does house and techno, and the crowd is a solid 60/40 local to farang. the upstairs balcony is chill for talking between sets. just be aware the music gets loud later, but it's not Khaosan loud

if you're into house and tech house, check out holiqht in thonglor soi 10. it's small and the sound system is actually decent, mostly locals and a few expats, not really a farang magnet. they do themed nights sometimes but fridays are usually solid for deep house. glitz gets mentioned a lot but tbh it can get packed and feels a bit generic once you're inside.

for something even quieter, try hippo bar off ekkamai soi 5. it's more of a listening bar vibe, they play dnb and techno on vinyl sometimes. cheap drinks too, like 120 baht for a beer. not a club so don't expect a dancefloor but it's a good start to the night before heading somewhere louder.

skip rachada and rca for what you want. rachada is mostly thai uni crowds and the music is all over the place. rca is bottle service hell. stick to the ekkamai thonglor side streets and you'll find what you're after.

thonglor and ekkamai are solid but if you want something a bit more lowkey and local-leaning, try checking out the bars around ari. it's a bit of a bts ride from sukhumvit but totally worth it. places like ba hao and j borosky have a chill vibe with a mix of expats and thais, and you'll hear actual conversation instead of just bass drops. for edm specifically, there's a spot called mustache bar off ekkamai soi 10 that does house and deep tech on thursdays and fridays, small but decent sound system. rachada is fine if you want to see how thai club kids party but it's more about the spectacle than the music

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
