Hey guys and girls,

I am a big banana fan and would like to try the blue banana ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Java_banana ) for its vanilla-like taste!

Does anybody know where I can get it in Bangkok and how to recognise it (i think they are yellow when they are ripe) ?

Thank you so so much :)

i've seen blue java bananas pop up at a few specialty fruit stalls in or tor kor market, the big one near chatuchak. they're usually sold green or slightly yellow, not the bright blue you might expect, and they have a bit of a silvery sheen when unripe. if you're near thong lor, the fancy grocery at villa market sometimes has them too, but they're pricier and not always in stock. wait until they're fully yellow with a few black spots for that vanilla flavor, they're pretty mild compared to regular bananas tbh

ngl i've never seen a blue java banana for sale in bangkok, they're pretty niche here. your best bet might be hitting up the specialty fruit shops around or tor kor market in nonthaburi, they sometimes have weird cultivars. or check the import sections at gourmet market in emquartier or villa market, but expect to pay a lot. they don't stay blue when ripe, they turn pale yellow so look for short chubby ones with a slight blueish tint on the skin before they're fully yellow

you might have better luck at the fruit section of siam paragon's gourmet market, they stock some rare imports but its hit or miss. also check the weekend market at chatuchak, there's a vendor near section 4 that sells unusual tropical fruits, saw something similar there a few months back. the ones i tried had a faint blue tint on the skin before they yellowed, not super obvious so look for short fat bananas with a slight powdery look

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
