Hi,

I do Expresso at home with my delonghi machine. I used to buy coffee 250g packs from shopee but I would like to try better quality ones.

What coffee brand do you recommend for tasty expresso? How much do you pay?

you could also check out the coffee stands at local markets, like the one at chatuchak on weekends. there's a guy there who roasts his own beans, sells 250g around 350 baht, and his espresso blend is seriously underrated. no fancy branding but the beans are roasted that morning, and he'll grind it for your delonghi on the spot.

another thing nobody mentioned, your machine's temp matters more than the brand. if you're getting sour shots, it's not the beans, it's your extraction. try pulling a longer ratio, like 1:2.5, before you spend more on coffee. once that's dialed in, even the cheaper local roasts taste way better than the expensive ones you'd buy blind.

If you're already buying on Shopee, the jump to a proper local roaster is worth it. I'd skip the big brands and go for something like Roots or Pacamara, both have solid espresso blends that hold up well in a home machine. You're looking at around 400 to 600 baht for a 250g bag, which is more than the supermarket stuff but the beans are actually roasted recently, not sitting on a shelf for months.

For a Delonghi, you want a medium roast with some chocolate or nutty notes, it handles those better than bright fruity ones. I usually grab a bag from Ink and Lion on Sukhumvit 26, they roast weekly and their "house blend" is around 450 baht, plus they'll grind it for your machine if you ask. Just tell them you're using a home espresso setup and they'll dial in the grind size for you.

honestly for a delonghi i'd skip the fancy single origins and look for a solid espresso blend, but not from the big grocery brands. try checking out gallery drip coffee near ari, they do a "no. 5" blend that's got that dark chocolate thing going, around 480 baht for 250g. it's dialed in for home machines, way less fussy than light roasts which can come out sour if ur temp's off.

also, if u want to save a bit, buy a 1kg bag and freeze half in a ziploc, just grind straight from frozen, works fine. or hit up a place like kaizen coffee in ekkamai, they sell 500g bags for around 800, works out cheaper per gram and their espresso roast is pretty forgiving. just avoid anything labeled "filter roast" for ur machine, that's a different game.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
