The air hung thick and sweet with the smell of roasting peanuts and something floral I couldn't place. I stumbled upon this hole-in-the-wall restaurant, no sign, just a few plastic chairs outside, that was PACKED with locals. They were all slurping something from these incredibly ornate bowls. It looked amazing. I tried to order, but my Thai is...well, nonexistent. I pointed at a bowl and smiled hopefully. The lady just laughed and pointed at a price on the wall. I ate it anyway. It was incredible. But what was it?!

honestly that sounds like gaeng jued, a clear soup with pork and veggies. the ornate bowls thing is actually pretty common for those places that serve the old-school family recipes. si phraya has a bunch of those spots that have been there for decades, they don't need a sign.

next time u're in the area, try the little place tucked behind the soi 3 intersection. they do a killer khao man gai, the chicken is so tender it falls apart. the lady there speaks enough english to get u by, just point at the picture menu on the wall.

i bet it was kuay teow lom lon, the bowl shape is distinct for that. it's a mild coconut broth with vermicelli and seafood, the floral note u caught might be from the pandan they sometimes add. the shop near the river end of si phraya by soi 2 does a version with extra crispy garlic on top, costs 50 baht and they have a laminated menu with pictures so u can just point

you prob stumbled into one of those old-school suki places, the ones that use those ceramic bowls with the blue floral patterns. the floral smell mighta been from the morning glory and cilantro they toss in at the end, it's a dead giveaway. there's a spot on si phraya soi 4 that's been doing this since the 70s, no sign but a yellow awning, they do a dry version with glass noodles that's even better than the soup one honestly

if u go back around 6pm the line dies down and the lady will just hand u a bowl without asking, she remembers regulars by their face. bring 60 baht cash, they don't take cards

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
