yeah the spy movie thing is way off, it's more like airport security lite. the real headache is the queue outside, bring water and a hat cause you'll stand in the sun for a bit. also they're strict about phones, they made me leave mine in a locker by the gate, so don't plan on checking messages while you wait.

one thing nobody mentions is the dress code, they turned away a guy in shorts before me. long pants and covered shoulders save you the trouble. and if your docs aren't in a clear folder, they'll make you sort them at the window which is awkward. i'd also avoid the lunch hour rush, go right when they open at 9 and you're in and out in 20 minutes.

ngl the spy movie thing is cute but the real plot twist is the soi dogs hanging around wireless road, they're more intimidating than the guards. if you're coming from the bts, take the skytrain to phloen chit and walk, don't bother with a taxi, the traffic on that stretch is a nightmare around 8am.

one thing nobody's mentioned: bring your own pen. the ones at the window are always out of ink or chained down, and you'll be filling out a form that's basically your life story. also, they're weirdly particular about the embassy address on your envelope, if it's not typed or printed they'll make you redo it. i'd write it at home and skip the drama.

if you're worried about the "bureaucratic black hole", just know the actual wait is more about the guy in front of you arguing about his visa than any secret protocol. keep your cool, don't argue back, and you'll be through. oh and bring a small fan if you can, the waiting room AC is a lie.

skip the embassy drama talk, the real move is getting there via the mrt to lumpini and walking up wireless road, it's a nicer stroll than phloen chit and you'll pass the lerk thai massage place if you need a pre-queue stretch. security's fine, just don't bring a power bank bigger than your phone, they confiscated one from a guy in front of me and made him walk it to a shop on soi 5.

bring a printout of your flight itinerary too, they asked for it at the window even though it wasn't on the checklist, the guy behind the glass just wanted proof i was leaving. and tip the security guard 20 baht when you walk in, he'll wave you past the second bag check, saved me ten minutes. the photocopy shop on the corner of soi 7 is a scam, they charge 10 baht a page, but there's a proper print place inside the robinson department store if you're desperate.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
