Overstaying My Welcome?

Overstay is on Soi Sukhumvit 22 near the Phrom Phong end, and the reviews are mostly in-jokes from people who stayed there. The "jade frog" is an actual ceramic frog by the front desk that guests rub for luck; the "whispers" are just the staff's running gag about the building's thin walls. It's a hostel-style place with a bar downstairs, so expect noise and a few odd characters, not anything genuinely creepy. For street food, walk five minutes to Soi 24 or cross into the Soi 20 night market, the moo ping and boat noodles there beat anything near the hotel.

the frog thing is real but honestly its more of a photo op than anything creepy. what nobody mentions is the rooftop, its tiny but you get a decent view of the emsphere lights after dark & thats where the regulars actually hang out instead of the bar downstairs. if u want street food without the soi 22 markup walk toward benjasiri park on soi 24, the vendors by the park entrance do solid som tam & grilled chicken til like 10pm. book direct next time too, the front desk gives better rates than the apps

if you're really worried just book a night somewhere else first and go peek at the lobby bar. thats the whole vibe in one room. staff are chill, they'll show you a room if its not full, and you can decide before committing.

the street food angle is underrated here. Phrom Phong BTS exit 2 down Soi 24 has a whole row of stalls that fire up around 6pm, the kuay teow ruea there is legit and like 50 baht. eat first, then decide on the hotel.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
