My friend who lives in Bangkok says it's got this amazing riverside bar, but she's sworn to secrecy about the cocktails. Seriously, she won't spill the beans. Anyone been there recently? What's the real deal with their signature drinks? Are they worth the hype, or is it all just Instagram fluff?

You've got some solid Chinatown recs already, but I'd throw in a completely different direction. Head to Ari, it's a neighborhood up north that's gotten popular with young locals but still feels nothing like Sukhumvit. There's a spot called Ba Hao that does Chinese-Thai fusion small plates and great natural wine, and the crowd is mostly Bangkokians in their late 20s and 30s. The whole area has a low key, tree lined street vibe with little cafes and bars tucked in side sois. A cocktail there will run you about 200 to 300 baht, and you won't see a single influencer setting up a tripod.

If you're looking for a local vibe away from the riverside prices, head to Tep Bar on Soi Nana in Chinatown. They do Thai-inspired cocktails with ingredients like lemongrass and tamarind, and it's a fraction of what you'd pay at the Oriental. The space is a converted shophouse, so it's cozy and full of character, not polished. Grab a plate of grilled pork skewers from the street vendor outside while you sip.

The Mandarin Oriental? Yeah, it's insane. The riverside bar... I've been a few times. The cocktails aren't cheap, but they're expertly made. Think classic recipes, but elevated with the freshest ingredients you can imagine. It's less about crazy, Instagrammable presentation and more about subtle elegance. The ambiance alone is worth it; the view at sunset is killer. Don't expect some crazy, over-the-top experience, though. It's sophisticated, not showy. Worth the splurge if you're already staying there, but I wouldn't go just for the drinks.

Totally get that. Sophisticated is good, I'm not really into the whole "look at me" scene either. Thanks for the tip! Sounds like a perfect spot for a special occasion, not a random Tuesday night. Any other recommendations for a less...pricey night out? Maybe something with more of a local vibe?

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
