your friend's right that it's changed but honestly the core is still the same chaotic energy just with more security cameras and fewer ladyboys trying to drag you into bars. the real shift is that the side sois got cleaned up so you can actually wander off soi cowboy without stepping over someone passed out. if you want the best people watching spot grab a beer at the outdoor tables of the tilac bar around 10pm, you get the full neon blast without being trapped inside. and yeah the moo ping cart at the soi 23 end is legit but there's also a tiny roti stand two doors down from long gun that does banana roti with condensed milk for 30 baht, perfect palate cleanser between bars

honestly it's still pretty neon-drenched and chaotic, just cleaner than the 80s version your friend remembers. the gogo bars on both sides are still the main draw but some of the dodgier elements got pushed out over the years. there's a decent little food cart at the soi 23 end that does moo ping for like 20 baht, nothing fancy but hits the spot. for navigating just keep your phone in your front pocket and don't take photos of the girls unless you ask first, that's the fastest way to get into a stupid argument

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
