I noticed this weird, almost glowing, fruit in a corner display, looked like a lychee, but way bigger and a vibrant purple. No label, no price, just this...aura. The staff just shrugged. Anyone else seen this mythical purple fruit of Tops? I'm half-convinced it's some kind of magical ingredient. Seriously though, what was it?

It sounds like you stumbled on a maprang, but the lack of a label is typical for Tops' test shipments from the Royal Project farms up north. Those purple ones are a specific variety called "Phet Sairung" that get that intense color from cool mountain weather. The staff probably didn't know because it came in that morning and hadn't made it to the pricing system yet. If you go back, check the produce aisle near the imported grapes around 10am, that's when they usually stock the experimental stuff.

My money's on a longan relative called "lam yai" or possibly a purple variant of a sapodilla. Tops at CentralWorld gets experimental shipments from upcountry suppliers, stuff that doesn't make it to the regular bins. If you go back, check the Thai fruit section near the imported apples, they sometimes stock seasonal oddities there with handwritten labels. The staff probably didn't know because it wasn't scanned into their system yet, happens all the time with trial runs.

honestly i think you found a maprang but the specific one you're describing might be the phet sairung variety from up north. they look almost radioactive under those tops lights because of the natural wax coating on the skin. if you go back, ask for "maprang phet sairung" specifically, the staff at the vegetable section near the entrance know more than the general floor people

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
