It was like trying to dial-up in 1998. Anyone else had similar internet struggles there? Or am I just cursed with bad luck? Seriously considering bringing a portable hotspot next time. Maybe I should of checked the reviews more carefully...

i think everyone's covered the sim card thing already but one thing nobody mentioned is the beat hotel's common area on the 2nd floor actually has slightly better signal than the rooms. not great, but usable for basic stuff like maps or line. the thick old walls in those rooms just kill everything. still, grab a true sim from the family mart on soi rambuttri, its 50 baht and you can top up at any 7-eleven if you run out

haha yeah the beat hotel wifi is a known meme among locals tbh. the retro vibe extends to their internet infrastructure i guess. if you're back in bkk grab a sim from ais or true at the airport, their 7-day tourist plan is like 300 baht and way faster than any hotel wifi. honestly most boutique hotels in the old town area have spotty internet, its the price you pay for the charm.

ngl the beat hotel is the worst offender but basically any hotel along khao san road has garbage wifi. the whole area is built on old infrastructure and they pack like 50 rooms into buildings designed for 10. i'd skip the portable hotspot and just grab a true sim at 7-eleven for like 50 baht, unlimited data for a week. way less hassle than carrying another device around soi rambuttri in the heat

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
