She's been there for a while, recovering from a nasty fall. Anyway, I noticed a small, almost hidden, courtyard tucked away, looked like a little meditation garden? Completely peaceful amidst all the hospital hustle. Never saw anyone in it. So, my question is: what's the story behind that little courtyard at Thonburi? Is it for patients, staff, or something else entirely? It felt strangely... significant.

There's actually a small plaque near the gate that most people miss, it's set into the wall at knee height and gets shaded by the bougainvillea. It says the courtyard was dedicated in 1982 by a local silk merchant whose wife died during childbirth at the hospital, he funded the whole thing as a quiet space for grieving families. The frangipani tree in the center was planted from a cutting taken from Wat Arun's grounds, which is why the flowers have that slightly different pale pink tint compared to the usual white ones you see around Bangkok. If you want to see the original donation records, the hospital's accounting office on the 4th floor has them filed under "charitable gifts 1980-1985," though you'll need to ask politely and maybe bring a small offering for the office lady who guards those files like a dragon.

reading all those stories is wild, i've lived in thonburi my whole life and never knew half of it. my dad actually worked in the hospital kitchen back in the 80s and he says that courtyard was where the cooks would sneak off to smoke during break, they called it the "green room" because the old chef grew basil and mint in pots along the wall for the soup. the frangipani tree was apparently a pain to clean up after so they'd sweep the petals into a pile and leave them for the monks to take for temple offerings. if you go during lunch hour around 11 you might catch a security guard sitting on the bench eating his rice, they're usually chill if you just nod and walk past.

yeah that courtyard's been around since before the hospital even existed tbh. the land used to be part of a temple called wat thong nopphakhun, they demolished most of it in the 60s but left that corner as a sort of nod to the monks who lived there. if you look at the tiles closely some of them have little lotus engravings from the original temple floor. the hospital's admin office on the 5th floor has a faded black and white photo of the old wat on the wall near the water cooler, nobody ever looks at it

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
