Gold everywhere. But I'm dying to find a cool, less stuffy rooftop bar with a view, somewhere locals hang out, not just tourists. The hotel bars are...well, they're hotel bars. Any suggestions for somewhere with a bit more grit and less champagne wishes and caviar dreams?

honestly for that specific vibe you're after, try the rooftop at the jam factory, it's a bit of a walk from the mandarin but it's an old warehouse turned into a creative space. the bar up top is called jfk & co, it's got a raw concrete and steel thing going on, no gold anywhere. the crowd is mostly local artists and people from the galleries downstairs, drinks are reasonable and the river view is actually better than most of the high rises because you're at eye level with the old buildings. it closes at midnight though so go early

Walk over to the rooftop at The Loft, it's on Charoen Krung Soi 36. It's a small hotel bar but the crowd is mostly creative types and expats who've been here a while, not the gold card crowd. The view is more neighborhood than skyline, you get the river and the old wooden shophouses. Their Negroni is good and about a third of what you'd pay at the Oriental.

Skip the hotel bars entirely and walk over to Wong's Place on Soi Samsen. It's not a rooftop but it's a proper dive bar with a balcony overlooking the canal and the old Rattanakosin skyline. You'll get a local mixed crowd, cheap bottles of Sang Som, and graffiti on the walls instead of gold leaf. Grab a seat up top around sunset, the Wat Arun view from that side is better than any skyscraper.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
