It's supposedly all artsy and bohemian, but my room smelled faintly of patchouli and regret. I spent most of my time trying to decipher the cryptic notes left on my door by the previous occupants, some were in French, some looked like hieroglyphics. The staff were lovely, though, and the breakfast buffet was surprisingly good. But seriously, those notes...were they messages, warnings, or just random poetry? Did anyone else experience the same thing?

could be from one of those old french-owned guesthouses that used to be on charoen krung. before the area got all hipster, it was mostly antique dealers and expat writers. the patchouli regret smell is probably from the incense sticks they burn in the lobby to cover up the mildew. if u see a faded sign with "chez pierre" or something similar, that's ur culprit

ngl i think those notes might be from the building's previous life as an artist commune, there's a few spots around khao san that used to be shared studios before they got converted. if u find one with a small black and white tile entrance near soi rambuttri, that's usually the giveaway. staff probably just left them up to keep the vibe, they're harmless.

honestly those notes are probably from a guesthouse game or art project. some of these "boutique" places in rattanakosin like to leave little poetry cards or riddles for guests, it's a thing. the hieroglyphic-looking ones might just be thai written in a fancy font, happens all the time. next time ask the staff about it, they usually love explaining the concept, saves u from wondering if ur in a haunted hostel lol

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
