timing wise the biggest thing ppl miss is that the 180 day wait after the titer only starts the day the lab receives the sample, not the draw date. so every day of shipping delay is a day added to ur clock. if Max is heading back to the US and the CDC rule applies, thats gonna be way past jan 15 anyway, so double check whether he actually needs the titer for entry or just for the airline. for a short trip back some owners just do the CDC Dog Import Form + proof of rabies vax from a thai vet and skip the FAVN entirely, but that only works if the dog was vaxxed in the US originally. worth asking Joe where Max got his shots first

Joe should call the NIH lab directly on Rama VI himself, the one at 88/7 Soi Bamrasnaradura. They sometimes accept walk-in samples if a vet calls ahead and marks it urgent, and you can pay the express fee at the window. Saved a friend about 8 days that way vs going through a clinic chain. Worth a phone call before booking anything.

One thing nobody's mentioned: the 30-day airline rule and the titer validity are two separate clocks, and the US CDC changed their dog import rules in 2024. If Max is coming from a high-risk rabies country, which Thailand is, he may need the CDC Dog Import Form filled out within 30 days of arrival, and the dog has to be at least 6 months old and microchipped before the blood draw. The chip number has to match on every document or they'll turn him away at the US port. Tell Joe to get the ISO 11784/11785 chip scanned and photographed at the vet before they draw blood, that trip-up catches people constantly.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
