Bangkok Trip for Young Women

A 17-year-old American and her cousins are visiting Bangkok for two weeks in January. They're looking for recommendations on must-see sights and safety advice for female travelers. If you're staying for two weeks, consider booking a cooking class in the old town. It's a fun way to learn about ingredients you'll see at markets and you get to eat the results. I like the one at Baipai, it's a bit out of the center but the kitchen garden is lovely and they pick you up from your hotel.

For a quiet afternoon when you need a break from the heat, take the ferry across to Thonburi and walk through the small lanes near Wang Lang market. There's a string of tiny cafes along the canal where you can sit with an iced coffee and watch the longtails go by. The area has almost no tourists and feels like a different city.

On safety, it's worth knowing that the BTS and MRT both have women-only cars during rush hour. They're at the front of the train and marked clearly, so if you're ever feeling uncomfortable in a crowded car just move up there.

honestly for two weeks you can take it slow and do a few day trips outside the city. ayutthaya is only an hour by train and the old temple ruins are way less crowded than bangkok's big ones, rent a bike there and cruise around. if you're into markets the train night market in ratchada is fun but it gets packed, go on a weekday not friday or saturday

for safety yaorawat at night is fine just watch for pickpockets in the crowd, and if a tuk tuk driver offers you a "special price" for a tour just walk away they're usually scams. grab bike is cheaper than car taxis if you're solo and don't mind holding on

also check out the rooftop bar at lebua for the view even if you just grab a soda, it's touristy but the sunset over the river is legit. and the bts skytrain stops at 12am so plan your night out accordingly or you're stuck with taxis

The Jim Thompson House is a nice break from the heat, it's a cool museum with a great story behind it. If you want a mix of shopping and air conditioning, Siam Paragon has everything and the food court downstairs is surprisingly good.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
