So, I'm heading to Bangkok to teach English after getting my CELTA. Any tips on making connections there?

I immediately went into my online CELTA course after university but I do not have any teaching experience outside this, though my MA did help a lot with interviewing, reporting and communicating. I previously lived in Bangkok a couple years as a kid and have visited again a few times in summer, so I am a bit familiar and hold a huge attachment to its wonderful diversity and culture, but of course things will now be very different living solo and working full-time. I would prefer teaching adults and do not particularly like working with very small children, so I would ideally like working within the high school - adult range but I would be open to any position that can be considered a solid start in the teaching field. I have since started to contact schools and other places directly, but I am not too sure which options would be best according to you guys. Which places would be worth contacting most? I heavily enjoyed the CELTA and engaged positively with my classes, and would love the opportunity to throw myself back into this vibrant city and culture and get networked. Also, would there be any group chats for other recent TEFL graduates residing in Bangkok or any English-speaking people moving there for work or gap year etc.? Would be great to be a bit more networked before I go!

Since you already know the city a bit, check out the Foreign Correspondents' Club up on Pan Road. It's full of journos and media types, and your MA background would be a good conversation starter there, plus they do speaker nights where you can meet people outside teaching.

Networking in Bangkok is surprisingly easy. Join Facebook groups for expats in Bangkok, search for ones focused on teachers or Brits/UK expats. Many schools advertise openings on those groups, too. Also, consider reaching out to international schools directly, they often have more structured recruitment processes. Don't underestimate the power of simply meeting people; a friendly chat at a local bar could lead to unexpected opportunities. Good luck!

Your CELTA and MA combination is actually pretty solid for the adult market here. For teaching adults in Bangkok, look at language centers like ECC, British Council, and AUA on Ratchadamri Road. They tend to hire CELTA graduates without much experience, and you'll mostly get teenagers and working professionals rather than small kids.

For making connections, hit up the Teacher Tuesday drinks at The Dubliner on Sukhumvit. It's a casual weekly meetup where a lot of teachers hang out after their classes finish. There are also several active Line groups specifically for CELTA grads coming to Bangkok, so ask around at those events.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
