Do you remember the [fake soju] incident that happened in Thailand back in February?

It was a case where young people in Thailand, who have been enjoying K-POP since their teenage years, started getting into K-FOOD as well. They were manufacturing and drinking soju, famously known for its green bottle.

It's an interesting story that highlights the popularity of soju, which was introduced to Thailand later than Japanese sake. However, consuming fake soju should definitely be avoided (some fake soju even contained cannabis, and it's also an act that damages our national pride!).

What do you think about the fake soju incident?

remember reading the customs report after feb, the fakes were mostly filled in samut sakhon warehouses, not some backroom in bangkok. thats why they kept popping up at chatuchak and talad rot fai stalls instead of proper bars, the supply line ran through the seafood processing cold rooms out there. so if ur buying from a market vendor with no importer sticker just walk, the real ones always have the korean tax stamp on the back

Nobody's mentioned that the fake stuff mostly hit delivery apps, not just bars. Someone orders soju through Grab or Lineman at 1am, the rider hands over a green bottle, and there's no way to check anything in the dark at your door. That's where the cannabis cases clustered, people drinking at home who never saw the bottle under proper light.

If you're ordering in, stick to shops that list the importer on the app or just walk to a 7-Eleven or a Korean mart during the day. And honestly the whole scare pushed a lot of Thai drinkers toward somaek instead, mixing soju with local beer, which masks a bad bottle even more. Better to know your source than to trust the pour.

tbh i remember that story mostly because my cousin got sick off it at a party in rca. his bottle had that weird sweet aftertaste that real chamisul never has, thats how u can kinda tell. the cannabis thing was the scary part tho, some folks got tested positive & had no idea why

if ur gonna drink soju at home just grab it from a legit korean grocery, the ones around sukhumvit plaza on soi 12 are solid, or villa market carries it now too. and drink it the way koreans actually do, ice cold, tiny shots, with samgyeopsal or fried chicken, not chugged like a beer tower

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
