Thai Traditional Attire Rental: Walk-in or pre-book?

I've done the walk-in thing a few times and it works fine, but for a group with makeup and photographer you'll want to book ahead to lock in the same slot. The shops on Soi Tha Tian right across from Wat Pho are less crowded than the ones right at Wat Arun, and they have packages starting around 1,500 baht per person for outfit, makeup, and a photographer who'll take you to both temples.

For the social media thing, just be clear about it when you book. Most photographers are used to private clients and will sign a simple agreement saying they won't post, especially if you're paying for the full package. The ones I've used on Soi Tha Tian were happy to hand over all the raw files too.

honestly i'd just walk in if you're going on a weekday, the shops around Wat Arun are everywhere and they'll haggle with you on the spot. pre-booking is usually the same price but you're locked in, and if you're late or the weather sucks you're stuck

for a full package with makeup and photographer, try Nice I Am Studio near the pier, they're pretty chill and won't push you to post on socials if you don't want. just tell them upfront no social media, most are used to it and won't make it weird

the walk-in shops near the temple entrance are cheaper but the quality of the fabric can be hit or miss, so check the dresses before you pay. if you want something really nice for photos, the ones on Soi Pratu Nokyung have better options imo

ngl the prices are pretty standard across most shops, walk-in or pre-book it's usually 1,500-2,500 baht for the full setup depending on how fancy the fabric is. but for a group I'd book ahead just so they have enough outfits in your sizes, the popular ones near Wat Arun run out of the nice colors fast

for a chill photographer who won't push social media stuff, try Ruean Mai Traditional Costume on Soi Wat Kanlayanimit, they're a bit further from the temple but they do pickup and dropoff and the photographer just hands you a google drive link after, no questions asked

the makeup is usually standard Thai glam though so if you want something specific bring a reference photo, the artists at those shops are fast but they don't read minds

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
