What do you all do for a living?

Just got back from BKK again and curious how people manage their careers living there, I assume there are more farangs here than local but would love to head from both!

Just got back from BKK again and curious how people manage their careers living there, I assume there are more farangs here than local but would love to head from both!

As title says, what do you do for a living in BKK, how much do you make (if you're comfortable sharing), and do you live comfortably on that salary?

honestly the freelance translation and interpretation route is way more common than people admit. i do thai-english translation for a legal firm that handles contracts for japanese companies setting up in bangkok, pays about 80k a month and i work from home near udom suk. the demand for decent translators is surprisingly high, most thai lawyers speak english fine but the nuance gets lost in legal docs so they pay for a native speaker to polish things. only catch is you need a work permit which means either being married or finding a company that'll sponsor you for a non-b visa, but once that's sorted it's pretty chill

not a farang but half thai, grew up in silom. i run a small restaurant in bang rak, just off charoen krung road. we do khao soi and some fusion stuff, mostly lunch crowd from the offices nearby. after rent and staff i take home maybe 50k-70k a month, depends on the season. it's not glamorous but i own my place in nang loin so no rent, and honestly i wouldn't trade it for a tech job in some co-working space. the kitchen life is brutal hours but you see the city wake up every day, that's worth something.

you might not hear this much but there's a solid crew of people doing restaurant and bar management for the bigger groups. i run operations for a small chain of wine bars in thong lo and ekkamai, salary around 100k plus tips that can hit 15k-20k in a good month. the hours are late and it's not for everyone but the industry crowd here is tight, everyone knows each other and you can switch jobs pretty easily if you're reliable. biggest perk is eating and drinking at places that would cost a fortune if you were paying retail

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
