What to do in Bangkok from 5am-12pm?

hit a 24 hour onsen like yunomori or a rich. they're open all night, you can shower, soak, nap in the lounge area for a few hundred baht. around 7am head to a local market like or tor kor, it's one of the best for fresh fruit and ready-to-eat stuff. grab some khao niao mamuang and sit by the canal before the sun gets brutal. by 10am you're clean, fed, and can walk over to chatuchak park for shade before check in

i'd go the opposite direction and head to banglamphu early. the backpacker area is dead quiet at 5am which is actually nice. walk along the river from near phra athit pier, you'll see monks collecting alms around 6am near the temples. grab a coffee at a place like riva vista or just sit on the steps watching the boats. by 7am you can wander into wat bowonniwet which opens early and has a peaceful courtyard. then walk to khao san road around 8am when it's just waking up, grab a cheap pad thai from a street cart before the crowds hit. your hotel will probably hold your bag if you ask nicely, most do

honestly don't waste money on another hotel for just a few hours. head to yaowarat (chinatown) around 5-6am when the street food stalls are setting up, grab some jok (rice porridge) or patongo (chinese donuts) with coffee. most temples open at 8am so wat pho is a solid choice after eating, it's right there and way less crowded that early. by 10am you'll have done a temple and can wander to a cafe near khao san road to kill time until check in

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
