Thai dentist: Schedule in advance or can I just show up?

Hi all,

I've got specific dates (a two week span) I can go to Bangkok for dental work. I can see from this sub that there are a LOT of dentists everywhere and the prices are all, for the most part, a third to half of what I'd pay in Australia or the US. I'm wondering if I can just show up and get dental service asap or if there's a need to schedule all this in advance. Thanks in advance for any tips from locals and pro travellers in BKK. 🙏

honestly just book ahead even if it feels like overkill. the good ones fill up fast and you don't want to waste half your trip sitting in a waiting room on sukhumvit. i'd message a couple clinics on line a week before you land, tell them your dates and what you need done. thai dental clinics are super responsive on line and they'll lock in a slot for you easy. saves you the stress of wondering if you'll get seen

imo it depends on what you're getting done. if it's just a cleaning or a simple filling, walking in is fine, plenty of places on sukhumvit soi 49 or near thong lo that'll take you same day. but for anything like a crown or implant where they need to prep and send stuff to a lab, you're better off booking a week ahead on line. the lab turnaround here is fast, like 24-48 hours for crowns, but they still need to schedule your appointments back to back to make that work. i've seen people show up for a root canal and end up waiting 3 hours because the doctor only does walk-ins between scheduled patients, so it's a gamble

You can absolutely show up and get seen, but you're rolling the dice on timing and which dentist you end up with. The big places like BIDH and Bangkok International Dental Center are used to walk-ins but you might wait an hour or two, especially after 10am when the crowd builds. If you know you want a specific doctor or procedure like implants or root canals, book a few days ahead on their Line or website and save yourself the sitting around. For cleanings and fillings, just walk in, but bring a book just in case.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
