ok so quick rundown from someone who lives here

asoke is the most convenient for bts & mrt interchange but it's chaotic, touristy, and the sidewalks are a nightmare during rush hour. fine if u want everything at ur doorstep, less if u want chill

klong toei is basically for the port & market, not really a stay area unless ur on a budget and don't mind noise. i'd skip it honestly, transport is just the mrt at queen sirikit which is a bit of a walk from most spots

phrom phong is my pick if u want a balance. emsphere & emquartier are right there for fancy cafes, but soi 31 & 33 have proper local street food and it's a 5 min walk to bts. slightly pricier but u get space and less chaos than asoke

on nut is the budget sweet spot, loads of street food on soi 69/1 and the bts is elevated so u get some breeze. but it's getting built up, construction noise is real. fine if ur ok with a 15 min ride to central stuff

phra khanong is cooler, more local, w district is fun at night but the bts is at the edge so u'll walk a bit. great for hipster cafes, less for pure convenience

thong lor is the trendiest but honestly overrated for tourists, it's all expensive jap restaurants and clubs, and

honestly depends on what kind of trip ur planning. if u want the full bangkok chaos with zero walking, asoke wins but it drains u. i'd actually say phrom phong is the sweet spot most people miss, soi 38 has that legendary night street food and the bts is right there. emsphere is new and has decent food courts too if u need ac.

thong lor is nice for a few nights but it's basically a bubble, u'll pay 300 baht for a smoothie that costs 60 at on nut. on nut is fine if u wanna live like a local, the market near the bts is solid and cheap, but the construction around sukhumvit 77 is annoying. phra khanong has a cool indie vibe, check out the artist village near w district, but the walk to the bts from soi 71 kills it in the heat.

klong toei is a no unless u specifically want the port area, it's not a base for exploring. my tip: don't overthink it, pick phrom phong for 3 days then move to on nut for the budget days. u'll get both sides of the city that way.

If you're weighing convenience against actual neighborhood character, here's the thing nobody tells you: the BTS and MRT in Bangkok are reliable enough that being one or two stops away from the main hubs matters less than the walk from your door to the station. Phra Khanong and On Nut both have that issue where the soi entrances stretch deep, so check your exact hotel location on a map before booking. I'd take a slightly longer train ride over a 10 minute sweat-drenched walk in April heat any day.

For food specifically, Phrom Phong's soi 38 is the classic night market street but it's gotten touristy and prices crept up. Thong Lor has better hidden gems if you know where to look, like the small noodle shops on soi 55 that don't even have English menus, but you'll pay for the neighborhood in everything else. On Nut's street food is genuinely cheap and good, especially around the market near the BTS, but the ongoing construction on sukhumvit 77 can make it feel like a building site.

One thing I'd add that others missed: if you work remotely or need cafes with good wifi and power outlets, Phra Khanong and Thong Lor win easily, the coffee shops there are built for laptop people. Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
