Where do you get your favourite Thai milk tea?

Do thais love Thai milk tea as much as a tourist that just discover it for the first time? Is there a local thais favourite chain or stall? And why is it your favourite? I love Thai milk tea. ngl thais love cha yen but in a different way than tourists. for us it's more of a "i need something cold and sweet to survive this heat" thing rather than a destination drink. my go-to is actually at the or tor kor market near chatuchak, there's a stall near the dried seafood section that uses evaporated milk instead of condensed and it's way less cloying. they also add a tiny pinch of salt which sounds weird but balances the sweetness perfectly. 30 baht and they use those old school metal cups to mix it

honestly most thais i know drink cha yen (thai milk tea) but not with the same obsession tourists have. we grew up with it so it's just a normal drink, but we still love it when the craving hits. my personal go-to is the stall at yaowarat road near the old chinatown gate, they use actual tea leaves boiled not just the powder mix. it's strong and sweet but not cloying, costs like 35 baht. for a chain i'd say cha tra mue is the safest bet but their sugar level is wild, always ask for less sweet or your teeth will hurt

tbh most thais i know drink it as a morning pick me up or with street food rather than a treat. my favorite is from a cart on sukhumvit soi 38, the old lady there uses condensed milk from a specific brand that's creamier than the usual ones. it's 40 baht and she's been there for like 20 years. cha tra mue is fine but it's too sweet for me, i always ask for half sugar and it's still a lot

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
