Veteran orgs in BKK?

Hey all.

Anyone know of some US military veteran organizations or get togethers in Bangkok? Maybe organized hikes or bike rides. Something.

if you're looking for something a bit more structured than the bars and rides, check out the rotary club of bangkok riverside, it's not vet-specific but there's a solid core of former military guys who organize the annual remembrance day ceremony at the ceylon war cemetery. they do a monthly volunteer thing too, like fixing up the memorial grounds or sorting donations for the orphanage they support, and it's way less awkward than networking at a meeting because you're just working side by side. also, the bangkok hash is fun but if you want something quieter, the expat fishing club does a dawn trip out to the samut prakan mangroves every few weeks, a few old army engineers run it and they're happy to talk shop while you wait for bites, just bring your own gear and expect to pay for the boat split between the group.

honestly the VFW post is the easy answer but if you want something less formal, check the American Legion's monthly poker night, it's way more chill than the sit-down meetings. for actual outdoor stuff, the Bangkok Biking group on Meetup is mostly expats but there's a solid handful of retired vets who ride the Bang Krachao loop every other Sunday, it's flat and shady so way better than the river path in this heat. also, if you're into shooting, the Bangkok Gun Club out near Lat Krabang has a few ex-military members who organize casual range days, just bring your passport and expect to pay around 1,500 baht for ammo and lane rental.

There's the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Bangkok, they meet monthly at the American Legion hall off Sukhumvit Soi 23. It's a proper sit-down meeting with speakers, more social than tactical, but a solid way to plug in. For something with movement, check the Bangkok Hash House Harriers, they're not strictly vets but a lot of the regulars are ex-military and they run Sunday trails through the jungle out past Bang Khen. If you want a smaller crew, the Thailand Veterans Network on Facebook organizes informal bike rides along the Chao Phraya river path on Saturday mornings, usually from the Phra Pinklao bridge side, and they're pretty open to newcomers.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
