Hi Group,

I have an interview coming up for major firm in Bangkok. The main salary component is 180k and there will be variable of about 10-15 %. The position is permanent with incentive of flight, pf, medical and the whole shabag. I have home loan obligation in India of home loan and investment of about 150k INR per month. My question is, this salary enough to have a good life in Bangkok? Also how much is cost of living expenses in Bangkok? Rent of 1 bed apartment, food, travel etc..

Your help is highly appreciated!

honestly 180k is solid, but it depends where u wanna live. if u go for a condo near the bts like ekkamai or thong lo that 1 bed will run u 30-40k easy, but if u go a bit further out like on nut or udom suk u can get a nice place for 20-25k and still be 15 mins from central bangkok. the exchange rate is the killer rn, rupee has been weak so ur 150k inr is around 60k baht which is a big chunk of ur take home. i'd check if the company can pay part of ur salary in inr or give u a housing allowance, some multinationals do that

180k baht is more than enough for a single person, that's like top 5% income honestly. Rent for a decent 1 bed in a good area is around 25-35k, food maybe 15-20k, so you'll save plenty even with your loan. Just factor in the baht vs INR conversion, it's been a bit volatile lately.

ugh another one of these. 180k is fine if you're not trying to live like a king in thong lo. rent a decent one bed in a decent area for 25k, eat local for 10k, and you'll have plenty left for your loan. the real headache

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
