As an Expat in Thai, what Apps do you recommend for staying in Bangkok?

for taxis, grab is the default but if you're near a BTS and not in a rush, just take the skytrain, it's faster than sitting in traffic on sukhumvit for 40 mins. for long-term accommodation, check out the "Bangkok Rentals" group on Facebook or use RentHub, Airbnb gets pricey for monthly stays. food delivery wise, get the 7Delivery app from 7-Eleven, they deliver their whole store for like 20 baht fee and it's clutch for snacks or late night cravings.

SIM wise, if you're staying a year or more, get a postpaid plan at AIS or TrueMove, prepaid can be a hassle with top-ups and data rollover. maps wise, Google Maps is fine but download the "Bangkok Transit" app for BTS/MRT schedules, it's offline and shows exact exit numbers for stations like Siam or Asok. social wise, Line is a must for Thai friends, but for expat groups, join "Bangkok Expats" on Facebook or the "Bangkok" subreddit, less drama.

tip: get a GrabPay wallet or TrueMoney Wallet for cashless at 7-Eleven and street stalls, saves you from carrying coins. also, the BTS has a "30-Day Smart Pass" if you commute daily, it's unlimited rides for like 1,500 baht and saves you

honestly for taxis i'd add InDrive to the mix, it's been gaining traction here and sometimes undercuts Grab by a decent margin. just be ready to negotiate upfront since it's a bidding system

for food, don't sleep on Robinhood, it's a Thai app with no delivery fee and decent coverage in central areas. good for when you want something quick without the markup

SIM wise i'd suggest looking at NT Mobile if you're on a budget, they use the same towers as AIS but plans start around 200 baht. signal's fine unless you're deep in a condo basement

maps tip: use Google Maps for walking but switch to Moovit for public transport routes, it's way better at showing bus and BTS combos. also grab the "BKK Rail" app for actual train times instead of guessing

for social stuff, Line is king but you should know about Pantip, it's like a Thai Reddit and helpful for finding repair shops or niche stuff. just use Google Translate on the pages

yeah so for taxis, skip Uber/Lyft, it's all Grab here. Bolt is cheaper sometimes but less reliable. for food delivery, GrabFood and Line Man are the big ones, Foodpanda too but I find Line Man has better local spots like the ones on Soi 38

accommodation honestly Airbnb is fine but most expats use a agent or Facebook groups for long term. you can find places on Hipflat or DDproperty too. definitely stay near a BTS or MRT, but don't sleep on the canal boats, they're cheap and skip traffic on Saen Saep

for SIM, AIS is prob the best for coverage, especially if you're outside central. get a prepaid plan at 7-Eleven or their shop, like 300-400 baht for decent data. TrueMove is fine too but AIS has better signal in the BTS tunnels

maps wise Google Maps works but sometimes it's wrong about one-way sois, Waze is better for driving. social apps everyone uses Line for chatting, not WhatsApp. Facebook is big for groups like "Bangkok Expats" but it's mostly drama

tip: get a Rabbit card for the BTS, saves time. also download "ViaBus" for bus routes if you're adventurous, but honestly just stick to the skytrain

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
