I'm not talking about the better known ones like mangosteen and durian - I specifically love searching for new and unknown things to try. I went to Or Tor Kor today and already found a lot of cool ones, where else should I go?

Wang Lang market across the river in Thonburi is worth the ferry ride from Tha Chang pier, mostly because it's where locals actually shop rather than where anyone's curating a display. Go on a weekday morning and poke around the fruit stalls near the market's interior soi, you'll run into things like takhop thai (the fruit of the velvet tamarind tree, sweet-sour and eaten fresh) and fresh luk chan, which rarely shows up at Or Tor Kor because it bruises fast. The other angle nobody mentions is the Indian and Pakistani grocers around Phahurat, they stock stuff like raw green jujube and ambarella that the Thai markets don't bother with. Prices are lower than Or Tor Kor but quality is hit or miss, so smell before you buy.

If you're willing to go a bit further out, Khlong Lat Mayom floating market (weekends only, off Bang Ramat Road in Taling Chan) has vendors selling stuff you rarely see elsewhere. Look for makham khaek, the sour green tamarind relative that's eaten raw with salt and chili, and luk yee, a small purple berry that stains your fingers and tastes like a cross between a grape and a cranberry. Bang Krachao's weekend market also throws up oddities since it's less touristy, though you'll need to cross the river and rent a bike to reach it.

pak khlong talat gets written off as a flower market but the fruit vendors tucked along the canal side near the Saphan Phut end carry some genuinely odd stuff, especially the ones selling nam prik ingredients. last time i found fresh luk rakat, that green spiky thing that looks like a tiny durian but tastes nothing like one, plus some nam tao you almost never see sold raw. go around 5 to 6am when the flower trucks unload, the fruit tables set up alongside them and prices are basically wholesale.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
